aswrvrt.sys issue, tried other threads, still unsolved

Hello,

Last night I was using the laptop, it froze and I manually restarted it by holding down the power button. Upon restart it could not load past the aswrvrt.sys file and an error popped up saying that system 32 couldn't run and that it was a "bad image". I've spent hours on this avast forum thread (I know nothing about computers). I downloaded rufus and FRST64 to a usb, then started the computer from the usb. The computer then ran some sort of reconstructive/fixing scan, and restarted itself to a black screen for over an hour. Upon manually restarting computer, it again is stuck at aswrvrt.sys. The system 32 error no longer shows, the screen just sits at black for eternity. Luckily this computer was already on its last leg and planned to be replaced soon, unfortunately it is my significant others and he is out of town. Desperately trying to fix it before he gets back, I feel real bad about it.

Tech specs: Lenovo (assumedly 64 bit due to internet searches), windows 7, Intel core i5, "ideapad"

You'll need to use other computer to gather required tools.


Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

• Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.
• Restart your computer and tap F8 to bring up the Advanced Menu, then click Repair your computer
  
• Follow the prompt to enter keyboard input method, and then the prompt to enter a password. If the machine does not have a password, simply click Enter.
  
• In the Choose Recovery Tool menu select Command Prompt.
  
• You will see a big black window with a blinking cursor (command prompt).

Access the notepad and identify your USB drive

In the Command Prompt please type in:

Code: (auto:0) [Select]

notepad

and press

Enter.

• When the notepad opens, go to File menu.
  
• Select Open.
  
• Go to Computer and search there for your USB drive letter.
  
• Note down the letter and close the notepad.

Scan with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Once back in the command prompt window, please do the following:

• Type in e:\frst64.exe and press Enter.
  You need to replace e with the letter of your USB drive taken from notepad!
  
• FRST will start to run. Give him a minute or so to load itself.
• Click Yes to Disclaimer.
  
• In the main console, please click Scan and wait.
  
• When finished it will produce a logfile named FRST.txt in the root of your pendrive and display it. Close that logfile.
  
  Transfer it to your clean machine and include it in your next reply.

I have not found the option to enter any repair setting. I'm sorry I am not a super technologically advanced person.

Did you get this by pressing F8?

Pressing F8 doesn't queue anything up. The only options are fn+f2 and fn+f11. I've read that this is a common issue in Lenovo products.

As soon as you start your PC, press and hold F8.

F8 is completely useless. Holding it down, repeatedly tapping it, and using the fn+f8 combo yields no result.  fn+f5 brings up the following screen.

When I opt to fix the computer it runs through system restore to no avail. Each time I do it, there is a brief window (approx. 10 seconds) when I can pull up a window that looks like the command prompt, but I am unable to type in it.

When you launch startup repair cancel everything if offers you and see if you can get to the window from which you can choose Command Prompt.
