codecs?wat are they

ive down loaded some films no not porn !paddy and max off limewire and when i try to play them it says something about codecs  but it will play the sound track , do i need some software im on windows xp and its playing the sound through windows player i think ?

Codec means coding-decoding.
There are several codecs like audio (MP3,Ogg,WMA etc) and video codecs (WMV,DivX,XviD,MOV etc).

You can get most of them. I recoommend FFdShow filters. But DivX 5 should probably also do the trick.

Also if any of them are .mov you will need to download quicktime from apple's website

Or QuickTime DirectShow filter from the same webpage i mentioned...
MOV videos are then played in Windows Media Player or an other DirectShow capable player (Media Player Classic for example).
