is avast scanning files received when using google talk?

Some more information would help, which files, can you be more specific?

If you are talking about IM protection, if Google Talk isn't in the list of supported programs in the Internet Messaging provider then it isn't directly scanned. Depending on your Standard Shield the file should be scanned as a newly created file.

If into Google Talk settings you could configure an external scanner, use:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe

Still it is not into IM providers supported by avast  :-\ :'(

Of course it's not because it's still in Beta phase... quite some time by now ::) I wonder when will they release gold edition.
