Avast Free on older Win 7 Starter Netbook??
« on: February 17, 2016, 03:50:37 PM »
Hello,

I have an older Windows 7 Starter netbook that I am hoping to reactivate for a trip - just to have access to email and basic web. My question - is there a version of Avast that can be downloaded and will run on that machine? It is a basic netbook with an Atom processor. I had a netbook version of Norton on it, but I don't want to pay to renew that and was hoping to find a free AV program that can work for the limited use I plan.

Thanks!
LH

I wish you luck, but these devices are slow as hell - even slower if you remain with its basic specs of 1GB RAM.

I have one (see below), and whilst it and avast free 11.1.2253 work fine together, don't expect lightning speeds for anything not just the AV side.
- Acer Aspire One, Win7 Starter (32bit) 10.1", 1024X600 screen, 2GB DDR3 RAM, Intel Atom N255 (1.5GHz dual core) CPU and 250GB HDD. Bold denotes I upgraded to a 2GB RAM chip in the single slot.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD - 27" external monitor 1440p 2560x1440 resolution - avast! free  24.9.6130 (build 24.9.9452.875) UI 1.0.820/ Firefox, uBlock Origin Lite, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

I'm using mine as a paperweight. :)

Thanks all! I am not expecting much - just want to not lug around my "good" laptop on the trip. I am mainly thinking just of light email and some websites - nothing more than that. I haven't used the netbook in ages - but thought I would rather risk it on the trip than my actual laptop.

Guess the only way is to give it a try - it pretty much is a paperweight right now - LOL!

Thanks for the input!

I can sympathise on the risk. My laptop got left behind at the Miami International Airport last month.
The good news is that it's being delivered to my home today via FedEx at the airports expense.
I also know that the computer has not been accessed since I last did that the day before it was left behind.
I did however already go through the hassles of changing all of my passwords and other security matters.
Travel is no longer the fun it once used to be.  :(

Couldn't agree more about the traveling. I hope your laptop is all fine when you do get it back! If I can get the netbook working with an AV, I think that taking it is a better option!

Good luck and thanks!

You're welcome for light work it should be fine albeit a bit slow. Just try to keep the number of programs running on start up, to an absolute minimum (security based and absolutely essential applications).

Will do!  ;)

Yeah, I turned it on a while ago to see if it even worked and it is painfully slow! But it may be OK for my purposes.

Thanks again for all of the advice!
