Avast and IMAP w/SSL
« on: February 13, 2006, 09:12:36 PM »
I'm using the newest version of Avast and I'm trying to connect an IMAP mail server via SSL on port 993.

I have Avast set to redirect port 993 and to check incoming IMAP mail.

It's not connecting properly under this scenario.

If I turn off SSL and connect via the standard port 143 (Avast is already redicting that port), it works fine.

I've tried these test with the firewall off as well.

I've tried with both Thunderbird and OE.

I also tried it with a diffenent IMAP SSL mail server.

Does Avast have problems with IMAP SSL?

No it doesn't have a problem with IMAP SSL, it just doesn't scan it, it is Secure Encrypted email and the purpose of said encryption is to stop access to it.

You will need to use a third party tool STunnel to act as an interface to allow avast to scan it before (or after) encryption, but before it arrives in your inbox.

These links give information on the use of Gmail SSL Avast and Stunnel, so from that hopefully you should be able to apply it to your circumstances.
Gmail and Avast Providers
Solution: Using GMail with Avast and a SPAM filter
Redirecting multiple SSL accounts
Stunnel now comes as an installer which installs Open SSL and Stunnel so now you just have to download the installer version from here http://www.stunnel.org/download/binaries.html

Ok, probably not worth going through that on multiple machines, but at least I know what the problem was now.

Thanks.

Always worth it to ensure that your email is protected, that is still how the majority of viruses are distributed.

Take one step at a time, do one machine, a while later do another, I bet it doesn't take as long the next time and the next and before you know it done ;D

DavidR, I meant it's not worth doing SSL.  I'll just turn off SSL so that I can scan with Avast without having to go through installing that extra software.
