AVAST Internet Security caused server connection problems?
« on: June 04, 2016, 10:03:39 PM »
I hope this is okay to post here. If not, please advse? -- Can you help?

I run a small server: My setup is: Apache httpd server v2.2 .25 on Windows 10 with php5 5.3.28 and MySql 5.6.15 & Wordpress blog.

ADSL connection with CloudFlare DDNS service – for the last five-plus years, everything has run beautifully.

My problem started when ….

I use AVAST Antivirus Free version. Apparently, the last update, I accidentally clicked “upgrade” instead of “update” and it installed the 30 day free trial of AVAST Internet Security. I didn’t realize that until a couple days ago, when the Computer froze up. Hard reboot - started getting errors: instead of my site, I get a CloudFlare page listing errors:

Forbidden, you don’t have permission to access this page; 522 Error “server timed out” and “Server Down.”

I checked Windows Firewall, a message said Window Firewall is being managed by AVAST Internet Security and it wouldn’t let me make any changes. So I uninstalled AVAST and reinstalled the free version. I then was able to reset Windows Firewall to “default” and then put an access exception for apache and port 80. The server has a static IP internally, so no changed were needed in my router.

It site worked – for about 15 minutes, and the errors started again.

Then I got errors from the CloudFlareDNS Updater app, “incorrect or missing token or email.” So I manually re-entered the token, and manually updated the server IP at Cloudflare.com.

The server worked again – for about 10 or 15 minutes, when the same errors started again.

Windows event logs said DDNS failed to update, can’t make a connection. I uninstalled and reinstalled my Cloud Flare DDNS client updater and it works again. My (windows/system32 hosts file had pointed to 127.0.0.1, so I changed it to mydomain.net and it worked! Well, for only about 15 minutes, then right back to the errors.

I scanned the computer with SuperAntiSpyWare, MalwareBytes, AVAST, TrendMicro Housecall, and Windows Defender: no malware or virus found.

I am somewhat novice at this; I am guessing it has something to do with AVAST having changed settings in Windows Firewall and/or other settings, and I don’t even know what to check for or do.

I’ve scoured the web and can’t find understandable advice (that isn’t over my head). I’ve been trying for 3 days to figure this out, getting nowhere.

I can connect intermittently, but the rest of the time I get this error:
CloudFlare: Error 522 Ray ID: 2aa5397467c51edd • 2016-05-28 22:43:33 UTC
Connection timed out

Other errors (from event logs):
