No A Ball In The System Tray
« on: May 30, 2006, 08:34:59 PM »
Hi,

I am sure I am not the first person to experience this and I can use the help. I have Avast running on every machine in my house (home edition) and my daughters trial version ran out. She obtained the key, and registered her version of the software. She then downloaded all the lastest virus definitions. There is however, no A ball in the system tray. Do I have to uninstall and reinstall the software, or did I miss something somewhere in the instructions? Her machine is running XP Professional, and previously it was hooked up to the Temple University network that provided its own software (I believe it was Norton). Perhaps this needs to be uninstalled as well? Thanks for your help

Try doing a repair then reboot, see if that does anything.

Note you MUST be online to do a repair.

Just go to Control Panel then Add or Remove Programs. Then select the avast program and click change/remove then you will get the picture that I posted in my last reply, when it first pops up you must scroll down to repair then click next.

Repair is unlikely to restore a missing icon, as a temporary measure you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers).

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), PrevX, etc. ?

I've got this too, also doesn't seem to be auto updating the virus database; I'm running xp pro 64bit so I was thinking that was the main problem but I see others on 32bit os with this too.
