Virus Changes Bios Settings
« on: July 28, 2006, 07:01:44 AM »
I am experiencing a very strange virus problem.  No matter which scanner I use, they all get part way through the scan and may find and clean some viruses but suddenly it will stop and freeze the machine or...........I will get the blue screen of death.  When I reboot windows tells me to insert a valid boot disk.  When I enter my bios settings it acts like there is no hard drive.  When I change that it boots just fine and within minutes, the whole computer freezes up.  This is a really strange virus.  HELP!!!

Thanks,

Tom

 :)  Hi :

As quickly as possible, get yourself to the Support Forums
of your antiSPYWARE Provider; if you know of none, I
recommend www.landzdown.com . Be prepared to post a
HijackThis program log, by download HijackThis (© Merijn) from:  http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe  .

Note: This is a complete installer that installs HijackThis to your computer at C:\Program Files\HijackThis, making an entry in the start menu and also providing a desktop shortcut. If HijackThis is used from a temp folder, it is in danger of being accidentally deleted by clean up tools.

At the download prompt, choose "Save". After the download is complete, navigate to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis folder and double-click it to complete the installation.

Hi tja01960,

After you have got rid of the malware, consider this information:

This sounds more like a dead bios battery and/or failing hardware.
If you are not a technician, I strongly recommend to hire one to have a look.
Although it is (at least in theory) possible that a virus alters the bios or its settings, I haven't seen one in the 25 years I am working with computers

I agree, that sounds more like a dead CMOS battery on the motherboard.
