Okay i have been having some trouble lately, I am running WinXP SP2, and I have the latest avast antivirus def. updated. I just recently tried doing windows updates and im not able to install any of the updates, thus let alone WMP11 for some damn reason. Every time i do the install and get to the validation screen it restarts it self, I also get this error message : Service and Controller app

See if stopping (not pausing) all avast! providers lets you install the updates.

I see no reason for avast to block any legit Microsoft Windows update to be installed.

Are you sure that C:\kpdtj12462515.exe is not an infected file?
To be sure, the better will be test the file against on-line scanners. Submit the file to:
Virustotal
Jotti

I see no reason for avast to block any legit Microsoft Windows update to be installed.
I've had this same issue since trying to update 3 brand new (no other security soft) computers in early October.  In my case its part of the "writing to disc becomes unresponsive" problem that I've posted about.

My advice to stop the providers assumes the downloads are from a known, trusted source (the Windows update site in my case).

But maybe the problem isn't avast  ??? ::)

The report (in the first post) comes from avast! Virus Cleaner, not avast!... so I'm not sure what's really installed...
