EICAR... detected by webshield or standard shield
« on: December 11, 2006, 07:25:40 AM »
Just a question... if I download the EICAR test file using Firefox, should it be detected by Webshield or Standard Shield? At present Webshield does not detect it, Standard Shield does. Just my curiosity on how the various modules in AVAST work.

A bit simplified but ...

The avast Webshield monitors your Internet web browsing - if you are accessing a virus as part of your web surfing avast will detect it and warn you before it reaches your hard drive (unless you download a virus during a secure web session -SSL- that by definition cannot be monitored by avast - or anyone else - in which case see Standard Shield).

The Standard Shield in normal configuration monitors all the disk read accesses on your system.  If it finds a virus in the file you are reading from your hard drive it will alert you and allow you to move the file to the virus chest where it can do no harm.
