File Protection in Messenger
« on: February 14, 2007, 10:21:51 PM »
Hello,
I run Avast Free Edition. When I installed it, I kept default settings. In my MSN Messenger, the 'Scan files for viruses using' (checked) shows "C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe" (with " marks). Yet, Avast doesn't prompt when a file is transferred in and messenger says 'File scan failed'.
Note: In Avast Instant Messaging settings, MSN is selected.
What's wrong?
Thanks for the reply.

Try it without the quotes, does msn messenger need any parameters, like %1, %f, %d, sorry I can't be much help I have never used messenger and avast doesn't need parameters but some applications do.

The Instant Messaging isn't relevant to the use of ashQuick.exe.

David,

to save me looking up your excellent graphics how about adding the "show results of scan" graphic?

None of above mentioned works. Took off quotes ("), 'Show results of Explorer Extension' is already checked.

Its not that scan is done and it doesn't show the results. Scan is not at all performed and I find a message in red in my messenger "Scan failed, go to Option-->File Transfer-->Scan Files" which is of course checked.

Still waiting for an effective solution.

In my MSN Messenger, does the 'Scan files for viruses using' have a Browse button to find the file to use (and was that how you entered the value ?
Is there another box for any Parameter, avast doesn't need one but messenger might ?

Does MSN Messenger give a reason the scan failed ?

Does the ashQuick.exe scan work in Explorer, right click on a file and select Scan ?
If not try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

Still doesn't work :(

I 'repaired' it, successflly, as the message said in the end!

MSN messenger doesn't give any specific reason. It says "The Virus Scan could not be completed. Please check your settings in Tools> Options> File Transfer".

ash.Quick.exe works fine in Explorer (right-click single File/Folder scan)

Despite all this, it still doesn't work.

Any more ideans?

I'm at a loss as to why this doesn't work when in this topic it works perfectly with windows live messenger, the new name for msn messenger. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=26703.0

With ashQuick working in explorer I can only think the issue is in msn messenger, you could try updating to windows live messenger. It may be best to back-up your contacts, etc. first, or you could try reinstalling msn messenger.
