What Operating System are you using ?
What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number, e.g. 0630-2 (see about avast!) ?
What is the infected file name, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?  Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections.

You have done the right thing, 'first do no harm' don't delete, send virus to the chest and investigate.

There is no rush to delete anything from the chest, a protected area where it can do no harm. Anything that you send to the chest you should leave there for a few weeks. If after that time you have suffered no adverse effects from moving these to the chest, scan them again (inside the chest) and if they are still detected as viruses, delete them.

 :)  Hi Elsiwin :

What you PRIMARILY have is "adware", NOT a "virus" ; adware is best handled by
antiSPYWARE/antiTROJAN program(s) . Do you have any of this type of program on your
computer ? If not, I recommend you get the Good & FREE "AVG Antispyware" from
www.ewido.net and/or the FREE version of "SUPERantispyware" from
     www.superantispyware.com .

It may well be adware, but avast has detected it and since it is win32:adware-gen, lets wait for Elsiwin's response on the infected file name and location and first confirm it is a good detection.

I too am having this adware gen causing havoc on my computer. I get tons and tons of pop ups. Im using windows XP and avast! 4.7. Nothing i do seems to stop these pop ups. I have about 18 infected files placed in my chest and id like to get these pop ups destroyed. Also, i keep getting trojan horse warnings, but im not sure if they are related to this.

If you can answer the previously posted questions it will help us to help you, thanks.

You may have an undetected trojan or a browser hijack responsible for this activity, but more detailed information will help, like what is in these pop-ups, etc. and the previously posted questions.

If you haven't already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode.
1. AVG anti-spyware (formerly Ewido) If using winXP. or a-Squared free if using win98/ME. Or SUPERantispyware Or Spyware Terminator
2. Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition
3. Spybot Search and Destroy
4. Spywareblaster Don't install this until you are clean.
