Update question
« on: June 19, 2008, 03:10:12 AM »
Hey all,  As with everything I use, i've chosen to "manually" update avast.

I have "only" been updating the database, not the program part / section..... Is that a good way to do this, or should I be updating both of these ???

avast! is "smart" enough to override your choice when necessary.
E.G.
If you choose "Program Update" and there isn't one available, the iAVS will be updated anyway.
If you only ever choose "iAVS update", at some point in time detection capability for a particular malware will require a program update as well as a signature update, so avast! will download and install both.

This is my personal opinion, not necessarily the opinions of others or those of Alwil..... :)

I think it's fine just to update the database and not the program, unless there are features you want that a program update may provide. I don't think security is automatically compromised by staying with a particular version as long as it is being supported. If a program update is mandatory, then you will have a choice whether to stay with that particular AV or go to another one. This will depend on quite a few factors. ;)

An instance of that is the current "migration" of AVG 7.5 users (such as myself) to avast and other AV's since the release of version 8.

Best Regards...
