version 4.8.1195 - end process
« on: June 02, 2008, 12:21:38 AM »
Greetings to all, as a user of MS Flight Simulator, I normally turn off all unnecessary services so as to free up RAM for that hog of a sim. Since I am on dial-up and not connected when flying, turning off Avast is no problem and gives me a considerable quantity of RAM back.

With this new version, I am not able to end the Avast processes. Does anybody know if that is possible somehow? Is this some attempt at controlling spyware? Understandable, but I wonder still how to use Avast when I want and remove it when RAM is needed.

Thanks for any response.

Carl

Well to start with you haven't got the latest version, that is 4.8.1201 that however, won't resolve what you want to do.

Why don't you just right click the avast 'a' icon, select Stop On-Access Protection and when you are done playing don't forget to Start On-Access Protection.

Avast really doesn't use that much RAM but if it is an issue I would suggest you add some more RAM. If you have 1GB or more RAM then what avast uses is minuscule by comparison.

The 4.8 version included a self-defence module to protect against malware that tries to disable the AV. See, Program Settings, Troubleshooting, Disable avast! self-defence module. That will allow you to disable services, again don't forget to enable it again, but I really think you should address the true problem RAM or the lack of it.

Thank you very much, David, I guess this will do it.

FS is a real hog, and adding more RAM won't help at all unfortunately.

David, i am wondering which program do you use to get these snaps of whatever concerns Avast. Or do you just use a Vista or XP feature unknown to me?

I use SnagIt a paid for image capture program. You can use windows printscreen with judicial use of the Alt+PrintScreen keys to capture the active window, but then you need an image editor to save it as an image.

With SnagIt you don't need an image editor it can apply lots of effects, capture a region of the screen, active window, multitudes of options, so it is very easy to do and better than trying to explain in step by step detail.

If more RAM isn't (supposedly) gonna help, how will few megabytes of memory help then (when disabling avast!)?

You can use Gadwin PrintScreen to get a screenshot (http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/) or the free version of WinSnap 1.1.10 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_winsnap/?2173).

Give Microsoft Flight Simulator X a try and all will be clear. Since FS will use all RAM, no matter what quantity is installed, as a routine matter, we always turn off all unused services. We even have various specialized utilities for turning off all services, and this is for people with 4 GB of RAM with Windows XP that only recognizes 3 GB.

Best regards.
