Currently running 4.8 home edition on XP. I often forget to click on the Avast desk top icon once the pc has finished booting. Is there a way (settings/tools?) whereby i can configure Avast to be running automatically whenever i turn the computer on? I have looked around but not found a way to change this.  Thanks

You shouldn't have to do this, avast is a resident AV and should start automatically on boot.

There should be an avast 'a' and 'i' icon in your system tray (bottom right of your screen) ?

What avast processes are running in Task Manager, they begin with ash or asw, see image ?
