Uncorrectable problem?
« on: April 07, 2009, 08:52:45 PM »
This is a virus that AVAST did not prevent and cannot find and eliminate.
These are some of the symptoms:

1) Google searches get redirected to random web sites
2) AVAST gets a "package error" when it tries to update the databse
3) System Restore does not work (even disabling AVAST)
4) regedit.exe does not work
5) cmd.exe does not work

I've tried to install some anti-spyware programs that I've read about on this forum. Either I can't install them, or else they fail when attempting to update their databases.

Any clues?

I've checked the HOSTS file, done a boot scan, etc, etc, etc

As "Tech" suggests:

1. Clean your temporary files.
2. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on. If avast does not detect it, you can try DrWeb CureIT! instead.
3. Use SUPERantispyware, MBAM or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete them.
4. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
5. Make a HijackThis log to post here or this analysis site. Or even submit the RunScanner log to to on-line analysis.
6. Disable System Restore and then reenable it again.
7. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster.
8. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.

If you can't get to any of these sites on the infected computer, please download them from a working computer, and copy the programs to a CD, or Flash drive, then copy them to the infected computer and install.
For generic computer (not avast) problems, you can also visit my forum for help: http://www.jacobytech.net/forum

But the issue is why AVAST did not prevent it and cannot eliminate it.

Because not a software is perfect and maybe avast is missing detect this one.
Other applications could detect it, correct the situation and allow avast updating again.
The best things in life are free.

 :)  Hi :

The Results shown in the Malwarebytes Log say "No action taken", which
most likely means Malwarebytes did NOT remove the "infections" . You should
run another Malwarebytes scan, then : At this point you should click on the Show Results button.

A screen displaying all the malware that the program found will be shown

You should now click on the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware. MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine. When removing the files, MBAM may require a reboot in order to remove some of them. If it displays a message stating that it needs to reboot, please allow it to do so. Once your computer has rebooted, and you are logged in, please continue with the rest of the steps.

When MBAM has finished removing the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.

You can now exit the MBAM program.

An analysis of your HJT log shows the following :

I do not know how all those spaces got in your posting but they mess up the results giving false results ... some good entries will appear bad. I have corrected them in the analyzer.

We didn't detect any active process of a firewall on your system. Reasons maybe:
(1.) You are using the windows firewall or a hardware firewall.
(2.) You are using a firewall of an unknown vendor.
(3.) You are using a firewall, but for unknown reasons it is disabled
(4.) You don't use any firewall at all.
We recommend you to use a firewall.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NAV] "C:\Program Files\NortonInstaller\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NAV\562C4DD5\16.5.0 .134\InstStub.exe" /RELAUNCH /RUNONCE /PRODID NAV
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [osCheck] "C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\osCheck.exe"
These 2 entries are related to Norton Antivirus from Symantec Corp. Normally not bad entries but they appear to be left overs from Norton AV ... unless you are running 2 AV services which is not a good thing to do.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe"
Ccapp.exe is a core process of the Norton Antivirus software. The process runs in the background and is responsible for continuously checking your system and inbound e-mails for threats such as viruses and Trojans. It appears that you are running 2 AV services and this is not good.

Because of the above entries, there is interference between the 2 AV services ... Norton & Avast.
This may be the reason why Avast did not detect, did not prevent, nor eliminate the virus. It could also be the cause of the "package error" when avast tries to update.

So, one of the AV services needs to be uninstalled. If you have previously tried to uninstall Norton through "Add/remove programs." this is not enough. If this is true, then you need to go to Symantec's site, download, and use the proper uninstall tool for the Norton version you had used.
