1. Is AVAST supposed to update automatically?

2. What is a "repair"?

1. Yes the default of the Avast! Anti Virus 4.8 Home/Pro should have it for the update but when you installed it you can do it manually the two update like the Program Update and the Virus Data Base Update so the rest will be automatic and ask when a new version of avast! will wanna be installed.
2. Repair is for repair a file like a picture or something that a virus infected your pc then Avast! will be able to repair it if he didnt then you can use Dr.Web Cure It. But its strongly recommanded to move the virus to chest and ask before if you are no sure to delete it or no.

Correct me if im wrong.

avast updates virus database automatically and the program update asks you permission (by default).

Repair is only for executable some files (.exe, .com) infected with some viruses (not all) and when the restoration info is stored into avast VRDB (virus recovery database).
