I recently updated the virus database on avast. after completion a popup window indicated
the new date and version number but "about avast" still showed the old previous update
and the program itself when run still showed the old update.
How do I get the program to show the current updated version of virus database?

Generally, after the update, the new date will be shown.
Maybe some glitch...
If you boot, does the new version is shown?

i tried rebooting several times but it still showed the old version and date.
interestingly when i tried to reupdate, a window did popup indicating that the database was uptodate and showed the correct version. the actual program however still showed the previous database version and date.
this is the first time this has ever happened.

Please, post the last 300-350 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. This has in the past corrected this out of sync version number issue.
