Safe Picture Site?
« on: September 09, 2009, 11:32:03 PM »
I'm not going to lie. When it comes to going online, I'm paranoid. Before my HDD was ruined by a virus, I went on google without a care and got pictures of random things I wanted pictures of, not caring what site the picture was on. That lead to the last picture I got before my computer was infected, and eventually ruined. Now, I'm completely afraid to get pictures, even with avast, outpost, malwarebytes, SAS, and browsing on Firefox with NoScript. The day before yesterday, I threw caution to the wind and went browsing on google to get pictures of some cool guns and planes I saw on Ultimate Weapons. Everything was fine. I got through most of the list until I clicked on one picture to get the full size, and the page had something from google saying the site was dangerous or something, I didn't stay on the page long enough to read it all. After that, I still got the rest of the pictures, cleared my temp files with CCleaner, and ran a boot-scan. The scan found nothing, but shortly after I had left the internet, Outpost said it had created rules for svchost.exe, even though I don't have the create rules thing set, and it's never done that before. Anyway, the scan was fine, but my PC was messing up a bit, with parts of windows staying after I closed them and other stuff. I did a boot scan again and it was fine again, and my PC is working fine now.

Long story short, is there a safe site like photobucket or anything that has pictures?

99.9% of all my pictures posted on here and every where else are stored at:
http://photobucket.com/albums/v190/bob3160/
I consider it very safe and have not had any problems with them.
Hope that helps.

There really isn't a safe picture site, If you need a picture for say a School Power point , use the schools computers for adding them in, for cool things such as flash animations just make your own.

I don't believe he is talking about those sites being unsafe, it isn't the parking/storage of the images, but finding source images in the first place.

From what I've heard, pictures themselves can't be infected, just some infected link on it, which if it means a link to an infected site, it wasn't that. I've meant the site the picture is on, which could have some script thing or drive by download, idk. Mainly I'm just nervous because I google for pictures, I click on the thumbnail, and have no real idea what the site is like that the picture is on.

Wrong certain picture types can be infected and or exploited, .jpg (the most commonly use image format) in particular.

@DavidR
Yup...I've experienced a similar horrible incident!

Its not ur ordinary malware, its Virut!

Thankfully, It was not on the internet, but rather on a USB so I took precautions and scanned it...

Results were terrifyingly frightening!

Many pics with jpg formats were infected by the same virus...

@author

Be careful out there, u might encounter death himself!^^

That is always a possibility, but would never be 100% guaranteed, but avast would go some way to help reduce that risk.

My post was only to state that what Brandon said "From what I've heard, pictures themselves can't be infected," was incorrect, nothing more and nothing less.

Oh I'm deeply sorry,I didn't really expect an issue about this but anyways, most have alot of flaws in them. I trust that your files will be safe ones but the site its self can be unsafe, intentional or not.

No more or no less than your harddrive which never stopped me from using either.
