lost drop down menus on Microsoft office XP
« on: April 22, 2010, 06:24:05 AM »
I have XP pro 64 bit. I recently upgraded to Avast 5. Two things happened: I lost function of drop down menus in Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Frontpage. I only get a "ghost" box under each tab. This means I cannot use any of these programs. Secondly, when I go to "all programs" on the menu bar, the main menu pop-up list comes, but the secondary drop down lists no longer function. Any ideas about whats going on? ???

Here's the fix, if anyone else is having this problem:

this "menu failure" is caused by confirmed bug in avast! 5.0.507. Until the fix is available (it will be included in the regular program update) please use the workaround below:

- right-click "My Computer" then select "Properties"
- open "Advanced" tab
- click "Settings" button in "Performance" section
- open "Visual Effects" tab
- disable (untick the box) "Fade or slide menus into view" then click "OK"
- click "OK" to close "System Properties" window
- restart your computer

Can you provide the link for the failure confirmation ???   Thanks
