Avast! Antivirus unknown to the public??

I have been an avid Avast! Antivirus user for the past two years.  I heard about Avast through a friend and upgraded to a two year subscription of Avast! Internet Security recently.  My question is this.  Why is Avast not well known to the public?  I work in the IT department for the US Army and would have never heard of Avast if my friend had not informed me of the application.  I have never seen any articles about Avast nor does it appear in "Top 10 antivirus programs" when the terms are typed into Google.com.  I am not doubting this program's capabilities at all.  I am just curious why it seems as though Avast is a big secret.

I've always known that Avast! existed. It's certainly no secret. If you amend your google search to best FREE antivirus, you will certainly see it listed. Many sites only list paid products and probably get paid themselves for doing so.

People are spending billions on ads of paid antivirus... That's one of the reasons.

Just like in Portugal, many users and repair shops recommend avast.

Using ... Top 10 antivirus programs ... a Google search produces many results where Avast! is in the top 10 AV programs. You will notice that I did not need to use "Free."
Keep in mind that most of these links are one person's opinion but they do show that Avast! is listed in the "Top 10" on the Internet at various sites.
