6.0.1289 ntdll.dll crash
« on: September 09, 2011, 04:20:01 AM »
Sometimes when I open the main Avast window it will crash out instantly for no apparent reason. It is very annoying and only happens on my main desktop even after I reinstalled the OS.

I am running a Core i5 2500K on a Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4-B3 with 8GB of RAM if that helps at all.

This is the error data that windows gives me.

ady4um the OP already has the latest stable version of avast.
@Craigb,

Of course, you are correct. I missed that value on the report. Sorry.

@RedHawk,

In addition to craigb's adequate suggestion and question, in case the repair fails...

If this is happening "for a while" (not just the latest version), you might want to:

1_ Remove any remnants of older security tools you used to have. http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/

2_ Download the latest Avast anew.

3_ Download Avast Clean Uninstall Utility from http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility.

4_ Uninstall Avast using "Add/Remove Programs" (better yet under Windows Safe Mode).

5_ Reboot into Windows Safe Mode (again) and run Avast removal tool.

6_ Reboot into Normal Mode and run Avast setup.exe.

7_ Reboot immediately after the installation finishes.

8_ Test and report back.

I reinstalled the OS about a week ago because I figured that would fix it (its been happening for a few months) but I will try your suggestion and report back.

That didn't help at all. Same error message.

The only thing related to Avast the *I* can think about is to skip step #4 of my instructions above.

If you follow those instructions exactly (including the several reboots), then sometimes skipping the "Add/Remove Programs" step can help. Effectively, you would need to clean Avast previous installation using only the removal tool (which is not ideal, but it *is* the best known workaround), always using Windows Safe Mode and administrative permissions.

Now, if a "really really" clean installation of Avast doesn't solve the problem, then you might need to look for other conflicts. This could be related to:

_ other security tools (past or present; please provide info);
_ drivers (video probably; update);
_ specific hardware settings (mainboard chipset and amount of RAM);
_ hardware problems (where Avast might be triggering the problem, but not necessarily being the problem itself);
_ others.

The above list is sorted starting from the most frequent problem (not necessarily your particular case).

Of course, it could also be a bug in Avast, but for that, we need someone from Avast Team to participate here in this topic.

To achieve the necessary attention from Avast Team, I would suggest:

1_ go to your first post in this topic;
2_ upper-right corner of the first post, click on "modify";
3_ change the topic subject to "6.0.1289 ntdll.dll crash" or similar.

Do you have memory dumps you could upload to Avast's ftp site? Let me know if you need instructions for this.

The whole OS doesnt crash just Avast so it isn't generating a windows memory dump. Unless Avast creates some sort of dump which I don't know how to get.

I am running on the P67 chipset with 8GB of RAM and I have the most recent video driver already (Catalyst 11.8) I'm not having issues in any other programs so I don't think it is a hardware issue. No past A/V because I literally installed the OS clean a week ago but I do have MalwareBytes Pro on here as well, MalwareBytes doesn't cause any sort of issue on my laptop though so I don't think it is MalwareBytes.

@RedHawk, when avastui crash dialog will show, don't close it, but right-click on your taskbar -> Start Task Manager -> find avastui.exe in Process tab -> right-click and select Create Dump File. Please compress this dump and upload it on our ftp (or anywhere else). It's the fastest method how to find out why avastui crashed. Thanks!
