Firewall and Script Shield turned off

Help!
My firewall and script shields have been mysteriously turned off and when I press "Fix now" in the Summary screen nothing happens, and when I go to the firewall to turn it on it says "Firewall not available" but I have paid for it so it should work! Likewise when I try to start the script shield it says it is "Unreachable".
I have been having trouble accessing websites, and today when my browser was closed and I was not uploading or downloading anything, the stats on my broadband connection was showing that there was both uploading and downloading happening!
Not sure what is going on here but kinda worried so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

have you tried avast repair and reboot ?
For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
