Dear Forum,

I used to get hardly any spam at all with my email address. Since last week, I have been receiving around 20 spam emails per day. The spam filter puts them in the spam folder, and I never reply to or open them.

However I would like to know if there is anything I can do against it?

I am also interested in the cause of the sudden spam onslaught. The only different thing I did recently was to sign up to a reputable publishing website with my email address and order something online. Surely it would not have come from there?!?!?!?!?!

Your comments, suggestions etc. would be much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Avastfan1

Hej Pondus!

Thank you for the informative post. Seems to deepen my suspicion that the website mentioned in my previous post is responsible for the spam.

It is surprising, though, because the operator of the website is a well-known and reputable company!

Thank you also for the gmail tip. The web-based email service I use also has a decent spam filter. It has caught almost 99% of the spam I have been receiving.

Hopefully, if I continue to ignore the spam and delete it, the spammers will think my address is dead :-)

Be careful not to even open it or depending on email client view it in preview mode, as either can trigger a remote access to say your email address is good. If and when that happens you can be assured of more s.p.a.m. So I would say that you should consider an anti-spam application that deletes the s.p.a.m from server level, that way you aren't downloading it to your inbox/s.p.a.m folder.

Thanks for the advice. I can view the Spam folder without opening any of them. After a quick scan, the 'empty spam folder' button sends them all to hell. 8)
