Unable to update avast (free version) at university
« on: September 27, 2011, 06:55:20 PM »
I’ve used avast antivirus for more than a year. It was a desktop and I never had any problem during this time. It gets updated even with slower connections.

Now I have got a laptop, and again avast antivirus (free version) from official website. It is working perfect just like my previous desktop, but I’m facing a weird problem. The problem is; when I connect it to internet at home (it’s a slower connection), avast antivirus in my laptop automatically gets update and a green popup appears. But when I connect it to wifi at the university (which is much faster than what I have at home), a red popup appears after few minutes saying “last attempt to update is failed, UPDATE NOW” but if I try to get update for avast manually, I get this message “Error: cannot connect to server”

I’ve Windows XP in my laptop, and the problem occurs only at the university’s wifi, not at home and I’ve also got it updated at my friend’s house as well.
What’s the problem?
And how to solve it?

Set avast! to: Direct Connection (No Proxy)
W8.1 [x64] - Avast Free AV 23.3.8047.BC [UI.757] - Firefox ESR 102.9 [NS/uBO/PB] - Thunderbird 102.9.1
Avast-Tools: Secure Browser 109.0 - Cleanup 23.1 - SecureLine 5.18 - DriverUpdater 23.1 - CCleaner 6.01

Set avast! to: Direct Connection (No Proxy)

Done it by using SETTING > UPDATE SETTINGS > PROXY > Direct connection (No proxy)

But the problem is still there :(

Try Avast main GUI -> settings -> troubleshooting -> load avast service after other system services.

It may give the wifi connection some time to be recognized first, and only *then* avast would try to update.

More options to this end are available, but try first with that one. Please reboot after the change.

I asked the system administrator, and he asked me to select "specify proxy server" and enter the local address. Now it's working fine :)

Thanks anyway for help!!!
