Which is the firewall? Which is the operational system?
avast pro is an antivirus only, not a firewall. Should only scan, not block.

Most common if pop3/smtp based email (not webmail) - avast! 6.x: SSL Problems The Mail Shield may not scan some e-mails - see https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=842.

Followed by still having existing AV or remnants still on system:
Have (or did) they have another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did they get rid of it ?
