Before upgrade to avast 7
« on: February 24, 2012, 10:05:26 PM »
Before I try upgrading to avast 7, I have a few questions...

David suggested exporting the settings from avast 6 before trying to update in case I have to uninstall / install fresh.  He wrote:

Quote
You should also export your avast! settings,
avastUI,
Settings,
Maintenance,
Back up settings button..

I can't find 'back up settings button' anywhere.  Is that the right place?
___________

Also, can avast 7 be installed without being forced to get chrome browser.  I've read where a number of users couldn't opt out... window disappeared too fast.

___________

Does avast 7 work on XP but with SP2?  (can't update to SP3 due to hardware issue).  If not, I guess I'll stick with avast 6.

Thank you.

How do you install 6 now?  I am finding it to update the installer and force 7?
Sincerely,

@ Rick F
That isn't in avast6 only in avast7, so the context in which I mentioned this isn't correct.

I installed avast7 over avast6 (no uninstall), once installed I exported the settings as they are inherited from the avast6 installation.

So if you have a problem with an install over the top (or an update from the avast6 UI) and end up having to do a clean install of avast7 you can import those saved settings.

Thanks David.  Didn't know the export feature was just in the newer version.

To JR, you can get older version of avast here:
http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

On the right-hand-side, you'll see the older versions listed.  I'm still on 6.0.1367

I found sys requirements for avast-7.  Supports SP-2 (thank you for that awil team)

But Microsoft won't be supporting XP SP2 much longer.

Um, SP2 support ended years ago.

You can't download version 6 anymore. Filehippo is high jacking the download with version 7. This has been verified.

Filehippo ver 6 is not 6???  The file sizes are different for the older versions, so they should work.

Oops, you're right!!  The file size on ver 6.0.1367 is 71.4 meg. Not good!

I didn't see an answer yet on this question...

"Can avast 7 be installed without being forced to get chrome browser.  I've read where a number of users couldn't as opt out window disappears too fast."

I may be sticking with ver 6 and not trying this update at all.  Looks pretty buggy to me.

As someone else pointed out in another thread, you CAN still get version 6.0.1367 at FileHippo. Instead of clicking on the green arrow download button, click on the mirror site link below that. I think FileHippo just messed up that one link when ver 7 came out. I prefer to think that's an honest mistake.

If you click on the mirror link you'll see the file size is 61.2 instead of 71.4 meg.  (see image below).

Can avast 7 be installed without being forced to get chrome browser.  I've read where a number of users couldn't as opt out window disappears too fast.

In theory, you can update the program without installing Chrome.

First, in avast 6 -> troubleshooting -> check "do not use chrome as avast default browser".

Then, instead of using the built it program update, use the full setup.exe. When the check boxes for Chrome are shown (look carefully where they are, as they are relatively "hard" to find), uncheck ALL the related check boxes.

Note: unchecking only one, sets the other as greyish, yet still checked. You must uncheck first the other check box, and then the first one, so both check boxes are unchecked.

Then when installing, try the "custom" install and review the options offered. Uncheck anything you don't want. Once the installation finishes, reboot.

After the reboot, if avast offers you Chrome again (also in some not so easy-to-see check boxes), then again answer as before.

If all works fine, use the system, reboot again and test if the reboot works as expected (no repeated avast screens). After testing (including reboots, waiting and using the system for some time and so on), then go back and set troubleshooting -> uncheck again "do not use chrome as avast default browser" (this last step should NOT install Chrome anyway, but I'm leaving the setting as it was before the program update).

Avast 6 works fine. There is no rush. Use avast 6 for a couple of weeks (or more), or even wait for the next program update (skipping 7.0.1407.)

Avast isn't forcing anything, this is FileHippo.

If you click the Main download button on FileHippo, you get the latest version.

You need to select the version you want from the list of previous/old versions.

:D You can avoid all this by directly updating Avast 6 to Avast 7 by clicking the Update Program button in Avast 6. All the setting remain the same after update. Chrome will not get installed if you are using Avast 7 free edition. Avast Internet Security requires Chrome (Chromium Browser) for Safe Browsing feature. So go ahead and enjoy Avast 7... The best anti virus out there!!  8)  :)

Thanks for all the replies guys. I appreciate them.

I think I'll wait awhile before going to v7. ;)
