ok here is all the details just to help

1) server is a Linux based server running latest version of Samba
2) documents are located in the users folder

when i access the files no problem untill i wish to save. then Excel freezes up and the only way i have found to get out is to hit the power! it even killed task manager!

Which 'synchronize' feature are you refering to? Offline files?
And are you saying that if you turn this feature off, the problem disappears?

Thanks
