Mailscan useful ?
« on: January 23, 2005, 10:10:56 PM »
Is the mailscan really useful  ???
I mean, i noticed on this forum and in my own experience that the mailscan is the source of of many problems ( impossibility of sending mails, server delay problems, freezing) .... it doesn't work well with  mailclients like Foxmail (exept if you make a special configuration of firefox with a loop : 127.0.0.1...) .
And most of all, the systemscan automatically scans the joined pieces when you click on it...... ;)

so i wonder if we really need this resident task.....

tell me what you think......

Yes the mail scan is usefull. I even would call it a must.
Do a little research and see how many malware is spread by email and you know what I mean.

On boards like this (and in other places), people mostly come in when they have a problem. If they don't have a problem you almost don't see them. This makes it sometimes look like there a 'huge' problems with a certain part.

If you read carefully, you will see that many (most?) people who come here with mail problems, just didn't setup the mail correctly. And almost none of them has read the help, which in many cases explains what to do.

Well, I wouldn't say it's causing many problems (in fact I'd say it's working pretty well :P)
What OS are you using? If WinNT/2000/XP, the mail traffic should be scanned automatically in all mail clients (Foxmail included), without any need of reconfiguration of anything...

i'm using Win98se... but 2 of my friends which are using xp have had problems with wanadoo (french)  smtp server and outlook express ..

Email scanning doesn't seem to be a priority for other antivirus (eg.antivir :-X)  and  doens' t look very useful to security specialists (if there is a good systemscan on ...)

but what if you just don't display HTML and first read your mails in text mode .... before showing html 'like foxmaildoes...) ;)

Poor antivirus application that does not give enough importance to email... A very huge source of malwares...
I use Antivir only as my backup (second, non-resident scanner).

but what if you just don't display HTML and first read your mails in text mode .... before showing html 'like foxmaildoes...) ;)

Good things but not enough in my opinion...
Well configurated, email scanner is a must have in my opinion. I have 'two': avast and AVG (only email)  8)
