microsoft update
« on: June 12, 2005, 05:41:07 AM »
I went the windows update website and installed this update:

816093: Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM)

About an hour after installing it, i got a blue screen, so i just restarted it and got another blue screen after like 40 minutes.  Does anyone have the same problem with this update?

I have windows xp, avast, netveda safety.net firewall, MS antispyware.

Thanks.

:) I thought Microsoft stopped supporting their Virtual Machine
and that Sun "assumed" control again !? Do you have
Java 2 Runtime Environment program, available from
    www.java.com, on your machine ?

That update was from 2003! Which means you've been vulnerable to a very common exploit for a couple of years now. (The exploit on malicious websites downloads a Trojan onto you computer without you doing anything- a true drive-by download.)

I suggest you do a boot time scan with avast! and also run Ewido anti-Trojan as a double-check:

The MS Java Virtual Machine is still being supported up to 2007, but it would be sensible to move to Sun Java now: Sun Java is under continual development where MS VJM is a Dodo.

i think what happened is that i was installing sbc dsl software because i had some problems with my connection, and it was installing the MS virtual machine on my computer, that's why i got the update.

i did a system restore and that seems to solve the problem.

Thank you guys ;D
