aswrvrt.sys hangs on safemode
« on: August 19, 2013, 01:41:10 PM »
I saw that this forum helped others with this same issue with a "fixlist.txt" and something called a "FRST.txt". I have no idea what that is or where to find it. I've been asked to start a new thread.

My windows 7 won't load and when safemode is attempted it hangs at aswRvrt.sys. I've heard that this is some kind of issue effecting users of Avast and Comodo. Any help in saving my PC's setup would be greatly appreciated.

Update, ok based on the solution"essexboy" gave "havoc1337" whom has the same issue as me, I believe, Farbar Recovery Scan tool (FRST) was used. I'm not sure what that this or how to use it, but I found it. I assume you just put it in a USB drive and it boots?

I'nm going to look for a usb drive and try it, and then come back here and update my progress.

I couldnt find a usb disk, but I put the file FRST file in a a cd and burned it, useing the "like a usb" option. The problem is it won't boot. I set it in bios so the CDrom boots first but it just goes direcgtly to the messed up win7 startup and nothing boots.

Basically I don't know how to use FRST, let alone the Fixlist.txt file Essexboy gave Havoc. Anyone out there please help me.

So Im watching a tutotial on how to use FRST and I don't understand how Havoc1337 got it to work if both he and I said that the OS in safemode or not hangs when starting at aswrvrt.sys. In the Tutotial the user gets to log on to the command prompt, which I cant get to because win7 hangs when starting up even attempting to go in safemode.

How did Havoc1337 do it? Anyone know?

You will need to run FRST from the recovery console for your version of windows

Is it a 32 or 64bit win 7

Thanks for the quick reply.

Win7 64bit. How do I get to the recovery console? Is that where it asks me to boot in the various safe mode options? According to the tutorial, the user was able to get to the command prompt, but after safe mode was loaded.

Unfortunately I have some bandwidth problems with my picture provider at the moment so there are no screens shots

Download the following three programmes to your desktop :

1.  Rufus

For 64bit systems
2.  Windows 7 64bit RC
3.  Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64

Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus
Select the ISO file on the desktop via the ISO icon.

Press Start Burn
Then copy FRST to the same USB

Insert the USB into the sick computer and start the computer.  First ensuring that the system is set to boot from USB
Note: If you are not sure how to do that follow the instructions Here

When you reboot you will  see this.
 Click repair my computer

Select your operating system

Select Command prompt

At the command prompt type the following  :

notepad and press Enter
The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open
Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
In the command window type e:\frst64.exe and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
The tool will start to run.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Thanks so much! You are good. How does someone get that good? Problem resolved.

I didnt get to do all that as I didnt have a usb stick handy. So I used imgburn to put the Win7 64 Recovery iso to CD. I was able to do a system restore which fixed the problem, thanks to the Recovery disk. To be honest, it's not clear what caused the problem. I assumed it was a blackout that happened last night while I was asleep and the PC was on that messed something up.

But then I started reading other forums about the bootup process and the safe mode boot up process hanging on aswRvrt.sys, and that it was related to an update from Avast being blocked by Comodo causing some kind of file corruption. I won't pretend to understand any of that, but it seems to be a common problem which started a month ago.

I'm currently updating everything I have to be on the safe side and disk scanning for errors. Thanks again.

Download the attached Fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that

Then try a normal boot
