Avast kicked-butt....but: now box is dead
« on: October 01, 2005, 07:04:58 PM »
Hello:

Here's my story and I'm stickin' to it....  One day last week, I walked into my production studio and looked on my Dimension8400 screen and what did I find?  I found dl.exe trying to run programs on my computer.  So, I did a little research and found that to be part of a worm/virus that I thought was w32.licum.  Turns out, after downloading and installing Avast, that it was w32.tenga -- Damn modie fodie...anyway.  Avast could not repair the files, so I deleted them -- ALL.

Now the computer is in complete log on, enter password and immediately log-off mode.

In addition, boot disks, rescue disks FDISK'n and all other forms of installation are NOT WORKING.

I have done self diagnostics and there is an error reading the A: drive and seems to be BIOS related.  The CD re-install won't work either because the raid/drivers that I made on a floppy, as per the "instructions" cannot be loaded.

Should I flash the BIOS?  IF SO, WTFreakin' heck do I do that safely?  Okay, how the hell do I do it at all without a working A: drive.

Can I get some love on this, PLEASE????

DEAD IN THE WATER IN OMAHA, NE (how's that for paradox?)

Check your bios settings for the floppy drive. (read the motherboard manual for info)
If they are correct and the floppy drive is still not working:
- remove the cables from it and reattach them

If the floppy drive still is not working:
The drive is likely broken. If possible, take it out and try the drive in another system.
That will tell you if it is or not.

Do this, and let me know the outcome.
I will guide you further on how to solve this problem.

Alrighty then.

BIOS says: OFF: USB: INTERNAL: READ ONLY

I've selected INTERNAL/ON

In addition, I've tried to install drivers from a DELL rescue cd and when I get to the Win98 Shell that runs DOS, the prompt tells me that A: is unavailable; however, if I wish to use the "drive" to try drive letter B:

I haven't tried the cable trick yet, but will tomorrow.  The above information is stuff I left out yesterday's message.

Thank you for your assistance on this and I'll write in the morning.  I'm in CST and you?

Ciao.

Hi radiolillis,

Just to remind you W32.licum and w32.tenga.a are one and the same virus. Different AV vendors different terminology. Here is the link to the removal tool: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD724AE0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=de

Cybersecurity is more of an attitude than anything else. Avast Evangelists.

Use NoScript, a limited user account and a virtual machine and be safe(r)!

Polonus,

Thank you for reminding me... with so many names to think of, I got the two mixed up with some other names that I thought it was.  Thanks for the removal tool, too.  Avast has already killed the darn thing, I hope, and my computer doesn't seem to work right now; however, I appreciate the thought.

Cheers,

Eddy,

Tried to unplug and re-plug floppy drive and ide ribbon.  No luck.  Floppy drive clicks over to read the disk and you can hear the drive moving the cover, but the system message is that the drive is unavailable.

www.bootdisk.com
Get a windows 98se bootdisk from there and create a new bootfloppy.
(Use a brand new floppy for it)
Then try to boot from it. If it still fails, your floppy drive is broken.
