CA etrust and Avast puzzle

When I run Avast (thorough scan) on C:\, Computer Associates eTrust Antivirus pops up with the message below.
I included both because of the close time yet the same file is referred to.

2005/12/04 13:37:55.187 File infection: C:\DOCUME~1\Ron\LOCALS~1\Temp\_avast4_\unp135459032 is Win32.Glieder.T!RAR trojan.

2005/12/04 13:37:55.765 File infection: C:\DOCUME~1\Ron\LOCALS~1\Temp\_avast4_\unp135459032 is Win32.Glieder.T!RAR trojan.

 Some times a virus is also found in another location such as this:

2005/12/01 21:00:33.671 File infection: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_avast4_\PxB47A.tmp is Win32.DlStwoyle.I trojan.
2005/12/01 21:00:33.843 File infection: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_avast4_\PxB47A.tmp is Win32.DlStwoyle.I trojan.
2005/12/01 21:00:33.984 File infection: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_avast4_\PxB47A.tmp is Win32.DlStwoyle.I trojan.
2005/12/01 21:00:34.062 File infection: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_avast4_\PxB47A.tmp is Win32.DlStwoyle.I trojan.

Again I included these repeats since the time is so close.

I am including another one because it is a different virus:

2005/12/01 21:00:19.609 File infection: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_avast4_\PxB473.tmp is Win32.Secdrop.JU trojan.
2005/12/01 21:00:20.171 File infection: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_avast4_\PxB473.tmp is Win32.Secdrop.JU trojan.
2005/12/01 21:00:20.453 File infection: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_avast4_\PxB473.tmp is Win32.Secdrop.JU trojan.
2005/12/01 21:00:20.796 File infection: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_avast4_\PxB473.tmp is Win32.Secdrop.JU trojan.


Avast says there was no virus present and CA does not spot any when I do a full scan with their product. Any thoughts?

Having two resident anti-virus programs on the same system is not advised, it doesn't give you twice the protection, just twice the potential for conflict as you are finding out. You can use a non resident scanner as a back-up scanner or use on-line AV scanners for a second opinion if required.

avast has to extract files in archives in order to be able to scan them (the _avast4_folder and the unp??? (unpacked file) is where they are unpacked. The act of unpacking/extraction is being picked up by the second AV.
