When Avast runs a scheduled full scan it displays the error message:
   "can't scan boot record"

Avast's scan report gives these details:
"Some files could not be scanned"
   "Drive D: Boot Record
"Error: No more data is available (259)"

Drive D is the DVD/CD drive and the disk in it is a commercial audio CD.

I'm running the latest version of Avast Free:   Avast 12.3.2280 (build 12.3.3154.0)

Settings - Scan Areas are:
   (1) All hard disks
   (2) All removable media
   (3) rootkits (full scan)

OS = Windows XP Pro SP3.

This error did not occur with previous versions of Avast Free.

This error does not occur with other computers running same version of Avast Free, same Scan Areas Settings and same OS.

When I scanned the same audio CD with Avast from the Explorer context menu there was no problem & no threat.

I did a repair of Avast from the Control Panel; problem still exists.

Any explanations or suggestions for resolving this?

No idea, but there's certainly no reason to scan a (legit) audio CD..!! ;)

A boot record is a small piece on a media that is read by the hardware's firmware in order to load software into the memory (ram) of that system.
This software can be a operating system, but doesn't have to be.

Since you only see it on one system and not on others while they all have the same avast version installed, the problem is not with avast but with the system.
It can be the OS, drivers, hardware etc.
Since the system is running XP, I assume the drive is a old one.
A good start would be cleaning the lens.
Something else you can do is swapping the drives of two systems and see if anything changes.
