what my avast found....
« on: February 09, 2006, 12:02:19 AM »
anyone ever here of this thing? I can't seem to find any info on this at all.
Avast caught this last night and I'd like to know what it does so I can make sure I'm clean.  Avast called it...

I think you are going to have to be a little more detailed. There is no way of telling from what information you gave.

In order to help fully we need more information....
- What OS are you using? is it up to date?
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number, e.g. 0436-4 (see about avast!)
- What was the virus name, what was the filename, where was it found
  example (C:\windows\system32\infected-filename.xxx)?
- What actions have you taken to try and resolve the problem?
- What is your email program? (if applicable)

Check your avast Log Viewer for information on any detections or windows Event Viewer if you have XP.

well let's see...
I run 2000pro and I got the lastest everything of avast free version cuase I just installed it day before yesterday.
don't think I got infected cause I think avast caught it in time and I had the file put in the chest, then deleted it.
it was found in C:\Program Files\WinMx\settings.dat file
and all it said was sign of MiME Family was found in the .dat file.
and I run outlook express.
What's wierd is when the alarm went off, I was'nt doing anything, not even checking my e-mail, was just watching tv, lol
So I think I'm clean, but I just can't find anything about this thing, like to know what these things are when they turn up so I know what kind of symptoms to look for.

Something was possibly accessing the WinMX\settings.dat and that could have triggered a scan by avast. You are likely to be clean.

I thought it might have been email as MiMe is usually associated with email.

Do you have WinMx media player, does it still work after moving settings.dat to the chest and then deleted it (not a good early decision, no more options if something is wrong) ?

No problem. Sorry I thought WinMx was a media player not a P2P app
