system froze after update
« on: July 22, 2006, 06:12:11 AM »
That situation happened most often when I was surfing using web browser. Avast would alter me with sound and right-bottom tooltip. Then, I could not open any website.

Even ctrl-alt-delete +(T) to launch task manager(process manager ) for killing browser process could not be sucessful. Process manager seems to freeze also, its interface would never appear.

So, only reboot can make my windows 2000 work. But the annoy update may spoil my system again. What can I do?

========================

I found a simple way to reproduce it:
1. delete file: data\400.vps
2. update vps
3. any new processes will be locked!

OK, it seems that google desktop( chinese beta edtion) conflicts with avast! I will keep a eye on the next days to see whether freeze situation occurs or not.

Is there anybody using google desktop with avast?

I think that there will be a number of people using the google desktop with avast, but I don't know who likely it is that they will be using the Chinese 'beta' version. Good luck.

Why do you think so?
Is there any error message? Memory dump? Log or event info?

I have experiences with google desktop with kerio (I remember). I must install kerio before google desktop on my system.

What I said yesterday is indeed unjustified. After google desktop was uninstalled that day, I re-tested using my method mentioned earlier. It passed!

but later I found the problem is still here....

So, I do not know what should I do... (removing ad-aware free edition? ).

I have experiences with google desktop with kerio (I remember). I must install kerio before google desktop on my system.
Kerio could monitor the 'programs started by other ones'. Google Desktop uses some other processes to run and Kerio could block them at startup.

googledesktopcrawl.exe
googledesktopdisplay.exe
googledesktopindex.exe
googledesktopsetup.exe
other plugins like pdttotext.exe

must be allowed to start into the 'Application Behavior Blocker' of Kerio settings.

So, I do not know what should I do... (removing ad-aware free edition? ).
Are you using the resident Ad-watch or not? It shouldn't interfere with avast or freeze the computer  ::)

ad-aware free does not include resident protection.

Thanks for your explanation about kerio. But now I do not use any firewall.

I have restored my system to an earlier ghost backup and wondered if my test method are totally wrong now.

Would you please help me test the procedure two or three times:(just a little time)
1. delete file: data\400.vps
2. updating--> iAVS update
3. any new processes will be locked! (esp. new webpages during updating or just after update will freeze...) BTW, my web browser is maxthon ( internet explorer can be used instead of maxthon)

 ???

Sorry, forget or didn't notice you're using the free one.

Oh, for your protection, you should  ::)

1. delete file: data\400.vps
Why? Just for testing? You'll mess avast installation.

2. updating--> iAVS update
3. any new processes will be locked! (esp. new webpages during updating or just after update will freeze...) BTW, my web browser is maxthon ( internet explorer can be used instead of maxthon)
The virus database is necessary for avast (and WebShield) to work... maybe you need to 'finish' the update and, maybe, boot to start the virus protection (with the new virus database)  ::)

Since update will freeze up my system, I need a simple way to simulate update in order to find out the source of problem. Maybe the best method is to backup my avast directory now. Then after next update, I will own an old virus definition ready for test.

 :)  Hi all :

     There's a brand new scam pretending to be "Google
     Desktop/Toolbar", as reported by Polonus at :
     http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=22353.0 ;
     I hope this is NOT your "Chinese Beta version" !?

I don't intend to install extra softwares as I got a relative clean system from ghost . I also believe the freeze have nothing with google toolbar or desktop.

I am just waiting the next update to see whether my system will freeze up
