Mouse going dead

Has anyone else had this happen?  I get a popup message that "plug in device not recognized,"  then my mouse goes dead and I have to unplug it and plug it back in. This started happening relatively recently.

Depends.

Do you know if your mouse is a PS/2 or USB mouse?  How old is your system and what operating system do you use?
