right click the avast icon, select Start avast! Antivirus, this will carry out a memory scan prior to you selecting what type of on-demand scan you want. The local Disks (usually a HDD icon) will scan all HDDs.
avast scans for virus infection if found then it would also remove any associated registry entries, but as far as I'm aware it doesn't do a specific registry scan.
