Slow download speed with NewsBin
« on: October 19, 2006, 03:11:29 AM »
 This is NewsBin's responce to my issue.(High CPU usage,low download speed:this has been attributed to a virus scanner.Some virus scanners now try to scan NNTP traffic.They were not designed to handle the constant high throughput NewsBin can deliver so they end up bogging down your machine.The solution is to tell your virus scanner to ignore NNTP and exclude NewsBin's data path from the scanner's file monitoring) Can someone let me know how to do this?

You can increase the scanning limit, see
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=11788.0#msg100032

Or you can edit avast4.ini, find the section [MailScanner], add (or edit) the line IgnoreProcess.

[MailScanner]
IgnoreProcess=newbin's_process_name.exe

of course, changing newbin's_process_name.exe for the real process (not file) name.

Or, very much more easily, you can use the GUI of the avast Internet Mail provider.

Click Customize > NNTP tab > Uncheck the "Scan inbound news" box.

Tech's recommendation would be more appropriate however if you use any other NNTP client to download smaller individual usenet posts that are more likely to prove problematical than the large files you describe.
