Avast mail scaner going up to 100% cpu usage
« on: May 08, 2006, 02:45:23 PM »
Hello all, greetings.

I have this slight problem with newer version of Avast, and it has been there since v4.7 update, and stayed there since.
I am regular usenet user, and for that I use two programs: Forte Agent, and NewsProxy. Forte Agent is usenet reader, and NewsProxy is somewhat of usenet proxy filter which can filter out messages by any header line, which kinda helps me in filtering out unwanted messages and servers. Both of them allow multiple connections to news server, and until now they both worked flawlesly.
In a last few days I noticed that when I am downloading bodies (not headers) of messages, CPU usage for ashMaiSv.exe process goes up to 100% cpu usage. Slows down everything. It didn't behave that way before, and it doesn't do that for mails, just usenet posts.
I don't have very fast connection (512k down), and it doesn't do much connections for downloading messages, only two. I guess something is wrong with that part of Avast.
I am using Avast for months now, and this is only bug I've encountered.

Ivan.

I don't know if it will help that much, but you can add executables to be excluded from mail scanning (if they do not use mail communication anyway...). You must add the line:
IgnoreProcess=<name of the process>
in the [MailScanner] section of <avast>\data\avast4.ini file.

Details? Click 'Settings' in my signature.

Line added.
Let's see Ivan.
Remember, name of the process and not of the program (path).
Ctrl+alt+del and you'll get the name of the process...  ;)

I know the difference ;)
Well, problem solved. No more 100% CPU - but also no protection, I assume?
I guess that attachments will be detected with on-access scanner when decoded to temp folder...?

Thanks for help. Will that be looked-upon on some of next releases?

Ivan.

Yes, they will be scanned... but which process did you exclude from mail scanner? Is it a mail client?

No, I excluded NewsProxy. The setup is, Forte Agent connects to NewsProxy (so, it connects on localhost, port... what it is for usenet, 119 I think), and NewsProxy connects to the real news server, downloads headers, filters out junk and passes the rest to Forte Agent.
Now the multithreading download works. Much faster download of bodies.
