Initial Problems - computer wont restart
« on: December 26, 2006, 07:26:36 PM »
I have been using Avast Home on my laptop for over a year and it works great so when my desktop's Norton subscription ended I decided to move that one to Avast Home 4.7 also.

The desktop is a Dell Dimension 4400  P4 1.83 Ghz , 512Mb Ram, 2 Hard disks ATI Radion All in Wonder video card & 20" Princton widescreen monitor.

I uninstalled Norton and restarted the computer then installed Avast Home and when prompted by Avast to restart for full features I clicked restart.

No I get nothing!  the monitor says no video signal, I can hear the HDD spinning but nothing is loading - no initial BIOS boot screens -nothing!Could the Norton uninstall or Avast install have killed a critical dll file?   Any suggestions on steps from here?    It all worked fine just prior to clicking restart in the Avast dialogue box.

Never mind - i figured it out - Thx - It wasn't Avast's problem -a combination of too many upgrades at the same time -all fixed now.

Anyway, it will be better if you remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
Then use Symantec removal tool following the three steps defined in the SymNRT tool info or here and boot again.
It will protect you against further problems with trash left behind by Norton.

Full SymNRT info:
1. Download and save these three files to the Windows desktop:
   a) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/MSIFIX.bat
   b) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SymNRT.exe
   c) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SYMMSICLEANUP.reg

2. Run the three files that you just downloaded
   a) On the Windows desktop, double-click the MSIFIX icon.
      Click Run.
A black window may appear very briefly.
   b) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SymNRT icon.
      Click Run.
      Click Next.
Click I accept the License Agreement, and click Next.
Type the letters and numbers that you see in the white box, and then click Next.
Click Yes or OK at each prompt.
You may need to click more than once. Your computer may be restarted for you more than once.
You may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.
   c) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SYMMSICLEANUP icon.
Click Run, and then click Yes.
      Click OK.

3. Boot.
The best things in life are free.
