Sliding Update Box Behavior

Can the behavior of the sliding update(s) available box be altered so it will not disappear until manually dismissed?  I know I can always check the log viewer or do a manual update, but an option to tweak the box behavior would be nice. Unfortunately, I am still cursed with a dial-up connection ;)
