Storm virus
« on: July 05, 2007, 01:07:41 AM »
My room mates computer seems to have been infected with the "storm" worm and has become part of a botnet. He opened an e-card attachment.
Every couple of minutes he gets an avast warning page that an email is being sent through him. or from him or something. He opened the attachment when his Avast wasn't working. He had been putting off registering the free home version and it had expired. Now it is registered and updated but we can't seem to get rid of this virus. We have tried:
Microsoft malicious software removal tool
Adaware
No-adware
Avast boot time scan
Spybot S&D
Zone Alarm
Hijack this
Any suggestions from anyone?

Hi looner,

Try some online scans. (Disable avast! while scanning.)

Avast has added some detections of the storm/e-card virus, so a re-scan might detect the Trojan now:

Quote
Complete scanning result of "ecard_2_.exe", received in VirusTotal at 07.05.2007, 16:39:57 (CET).

Antivirus   Version   Update   Result

Avast   4.7.997.0   07.04.2007   Win32:Tibs-AZJ

Besides what Frank suggested, you can try full computer on-line scanning at
Kaspersky (very good detection rates)
AVGas (does not necessary if you have AVG antispyware installed)
HitmanPro (new online scanner with multiply scanners)
