4.7.1029 Vista won't boot
« on: August 03, 2007, 03:54:39 AM »
Version 4.7.1001 works great.  After I update to 4.7.1029, all I get is a cursor, it doesn't even get to the login screen.  It has taken a couple of hours to figure out what was causing the problem.

My solution was to boot into safe mode, uninstall Avast, reboot, install Avast 4.7.1001(latest from CNet), reboot, get the virus definitions, and don't upgrade.

As soon as I upgrade, same thing, Vista Home Premium won't boot.  This Vista build is only a week old on a new machine.

I would now like to see the versions on your web site, as Avast will always show that there is a newer version, and I won't know when it is a working newer version (aka NOT 4.7.1029).  I was surprised when I didn't see anybody else complain.

It would be good if we could recover the setup.log file from the old installation to try to debug...
Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially 'Errors'.

It sure does apply.  I'll have to try and uninstall that security program.  Thanks.

I uninstalled ASUS Data Security Manager.  And updated Avast to 4.7.1029

The computer boots fine now.  So it is something related to the changes betweed Avast 4.7.1001 and 4.7.1029.

I'm guessing that this will cause a LOT of desperate users.  Hopefully they see this post.

Thanks for everyones help

If the two programs are conflicting and there isn't a solution, neither from Alwil nor from ASUS, I see no other way then choosing one of them to protect your computer. Does ASUS provide antivirus protection?

yes Asus provides Norton.  I haven't used it.  Avast used to work all the way up until 4.7.1029 failed.

I booted into safe mode, add/remove programs selected ASUS Data Security Manager, and now everything works fine.

That's the problem.
