Problems after registration

I'm using avast home.  The trial period ran out and I got a registration key, but afterwards the avast tray icon doesn't show and whenever I try to turn on the resident scanner it just resets itself to "disabled."  There is no indication that avast is even running, so I'm not sure if I even have antivirus atm.  What can I do to fix this?

You could try a repair. Control panel, add/remove programs, uninstall, scroll down to repair.

Or uninstall and reinstall.

Is there anything in the logs? Right click the "a" icon, select log viewer, error button.
