PROBLEMS
« on: September 01, 2008, 02:24:47 PM »
Hi. I have three problems:
1. I start avast. It does the memory test and it says that the program will start immediately. And it doesn't. Every time I have to repeat these steps in order to open the program.
2. It doesn't scan some files at all... I can stay five days and it still doesn't scan them...
3. I tried to scan some avi files, but it said that they were unable to be scanned, and it said that they were decompression bombs, or something like that... I deleted them. Did I do good?

PLEASE HELP! Thank you!

Which other antivirus did you have in this machine in the past?
How did you uninstall them?

Can you run ashSimp2.exe from avast folder?
Is the 'a' blue icon swirling in the system tray?

I don't remember the name of that antivirus. It was weak anyway. I formatted my computer many times since I last used that.
I can run that exe file and the a icon is swirling from time to time... now it's not.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

No, as the indication is of a file that can't be scanned and not a 100% indication that it is infected/malicious, etc.

Decompression Bomb, a file that is highly compressed, which could be very large when decompressed. This used to be a tactic long ago to swamp the system, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=8943.msg73950#msg73950

Deletion isn't really a good first option (you have none left), 'first do no harm' don't delete, send virus to the chest and investigate.
