avast broke my pc!

Downloaded avast 4.8 and installed it  After it deleted all the viruses it closed the pc down then rebooted its gets to windowns user log in and looks if its all going to start as normal  then it says logging off. No matter what user i sign in as Tried last good configuration but it still does it. Safe mode is just the same looks as all is ok then just logs of seconds after letting me sign in.

what do id do?

Hmmm... did you remember the file name and path that were detected as infected?
Can you try to repair your windows installation?
Overinstallation can solve the problem and you won't lose your programs, settings, data, files, etc.
Just choose 'Repair' installation of Windows and install 'over' the old installation.

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

In safe mode avast doesn't start, so there is something strange going on.

Sorry david i had AVG free on the pc but it was prevented from running by the viruses even though it updated by downloding the updates but when ever i tried to do a scan it just came up with the errors files not found.
so new update is that i tried to instal windows again but it stops as it cant read certain file from my scratched xp disk!

Safe to say wont be trying Avast again!

Two antivirus at the same time in the same computer will give you conflicts.
Disable is not enough.
avast won't be correctly installed and running if you haven't previously uninstalled AVG.

you need to run the new (july) avg removal tool before installing any new AV including avast- or even reinstalling avg if upgrading from old version
however it appears that you problem could be outside the scope of what you have mentioned
have you run any of the on line av scans
start with dr web cure it - you might have to run it from a boot cd
a-squared and several other programs can also be run from a boot cd

AVG uninstall trashes yet another system
not an avast problem
McAfee and Norton/Symantic have similar uninstall issues
can you Restore?

As has been said having two AVs installed at the same time can cause conflicts and one of those is locking up the system and that could happen on boot as drivers are loaded they could conflict and lock.

So I don't believe avast is entirely at fault here as it takes two to conflict.

Most likely, you will have similar problems with any other av until you completely remove AVG with the tool as stated above.

I can not see this as a fault of avast.

Unfortunately when a persons knowledge is limited, it's very easy to balme the last thing installed on your computer
for all subsequent computer problems.
Anger will not solve this problem only an understanding of the proper steps to take to remedy
the conflicts between the 2 now partially installed Anti virus programs.
Both must be completely un-installed. The system should be rebooted between each uninstall
and only once this is done, should a new AV program be installed. (I suggest avast!)
