Greyed out icon
« on: December 23, 2008, 12:18:02 PM »
Hi,

Hope you can help. I've had a few issues with Avast over the last few days - first, a red circle appeared and I'm told I have an RPC error. I follow the instructions, uninstall & install without issue and now the icon in the system tray is greyed out. It still claims I have an RPC error, but the program takes me to the screen giving advice for a red circle appearing on top of the icon.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Elluche

We will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?  Did you have in the past?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?

Hi,

Thanks for coming back so quickly. In answer to your questions:

1. Windows XP and yes.
2. Using Avast 4.8 - tried to update VPS and was told it was up to date, although under about Avast!... it says Cannot obtain information, no more data is available.
3. Windows own.
4. No, only Avast on this system
5. No.

Thanks again

I still bet that some antivirus could have been installed by the manufacturer of the computer (OEM)...
RPC error is generally due to other antivirus remains and a red cross appears in the top of the icon.
I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.
