freeripmp3, Avast, Virustotal
« on: December 01, 2008, 04:09:22 AM »
I have not ever run this program.
I have read that it has a toolbar or something you can OPT-OUT of.
Avast detected it in the last version, I quarantined it, then I decided to
"restore" it and checked again using Avast, 4.8.1290, VPS-081130-0, and it
does not detect anything.

I went to Virustotal and had to "re-analyze" the file, and out of the
37 it was detected by  9 to be myway, and websearch junk.
Is this a problem with Avast ?, it sure would be nice if Avast would recognize
this too, as it did before, even if it does have a opt-out box.
I have been infected by myway and websearch, no thanks!

Maybe I should upload the file to Avast or put the Virustotal results here ?

Please submit the file to virus@avast.com in a password protected zip.
Don't forget to mention the password in your email.

I did send it to Avast, about a month ago, but have not heard or seen anything from them.
Any clues ?

Have you tried scanning it again in the chest to see if it is still detected ?

You will not normally be contacted unless they require more information.

I was hoping they would post something in this thread.
I just now opened the chest right clicked and scanned with no bad results,
so I "restored" the file and scanned again with no bad results,
So they must think it is okay to have the "myway" in this file because apparently you can opt-out of installing it, and they must have have updated the defintions, to not alert us of this.
Even though there is still 8 of 37 at visustotal.
Since it found it the first time, I am leary of it.
Since it found it the first time, I am questioning Avast on is it something missed in a defintion update or a decision or any of the other scenarios it
could be.

Personally regardless of what it says I would get rid of the myway search/toolbar/whatever as it really isn't necessary. So you should be able to get rid of it.

The problem with supposed tools like this is they don't give anything for free there is always an element of benefit to the provider and this is usually marketing information, etc. What you are searching for could be used for targeted ads, etc. some might class this as adware/spyware. However, if it is something which you have opted in to then that argument can't stand this is probably why 29 of 37 don't classify it as anything.
