Expired License
« on: February 10, 2009, 08:07:27 PM »
I have purchased a three year subscription to Avast 4.8 Professional Edition.  I installed the program and ran boot file and start up checks.  The Avast program later reported "Virus Data Base Has Been Updated."  A short time later I was notified that there is an update to the anti-virus program indicated in a green pop-up so clicked it and it installed the update to the program.  A system reboot was required and now I am getting a different pop-up informing me that my Avast license has expired and my system is completely unprotected.  However, the Avast program indicates that there is still 2542 days left on the license.  The anti-virus program seems to be functioning fine except the expired license pop-up continues to "pop-up."  The pop-up gives options which direct me back to the Avast home page to renew my license, to uninstall the program (not recommended), or "if you already have a license insert it here."  I re-insert the license and then the pop-up goes away only to return sometime later.  I have un-installed re-installed the Avast program with no change in outcome.  My computer runs on Win XP Pro-SP3; 1GB RAM, P-4 at 2.4 Ghz, and an integrated video card.  Aside from the pesky pop-up, everything seems to run fine.  Any suggestions on how to stop the pop-up from "popping-up?"

Check your system date and ensure the day/month/year are correct as required.

Thank you for the suggestion.  I rebooted and entered the BIOS: the system date and time are accurate.

Try a clean reinstall completely removing the old version.

Download the latest version of avast Pro and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.
1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot.  If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
3. install the latest version, reboot.

Thank you DavidR for the suggestion.  I unistalled Avast, rebooted, ran aswclear program, rebooted, new install of Avast, rebooted, boot file and startup file check, inserted license, Avast updated virus database and then, sadly, the license expiration pop-up window re-emerges.  On the positive side, Avast still has 2524 days left on the license according to the program.  I bought this license on-line through Ebay in what seemed to be a reputable manner.  I wonder if I have been had.
Respectfully.

I fear you may have been conned, as far as I'm aware avast nor its distributors/resellers sell through ebay.

I would suggest that you contact sales (at) avast (dot) com and give them full information on the seller to see if they are an authorised distributor/reseller. They will almost certainly want to know the license number to check if it is valid.

You need to do this quickly if it is disreputable, then you need to contact ebay to try and stop this seller and attempt to get your money back, though job though by all accounts.

According to the Avast website the max. license duration is 3 years (1095 days). So I'm almost sure you got a keygenned (illegal) license.

Yes, that is correct three years, I have to admit I never gave the number of days left a second thought.
